The external branches of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) are kicking against proposed amendments by the party to prevent members from the diaspora from contesting for any position of office within the party.

The ruling NPP has proposed a constitutional amendment to commensurate with the national constitution where people with dual citizenship will not be allowed to contest for any position in the party.

The party will be considering the proposal at its Annual Delegates Congress to be held on Sunday December 17, 2017 in Kumasi.

The external branches are against the proposal and have therefore, appealed to all delegates to the conference not to entertain any constitutional amendment which will prevent people abroad and with dual citizenship from contesting.

Organizer for the NPP in Holland, Solomon Nyarko, says the proposal is retrogressive and should not be entertained by any delegate.

He quizzed why the party will accept donations and dues from members abroad and yet, they will propose for the same people to be prevented from contesting positions in the party due to their dual citizenship.

When asked if they will consider resigning from the party should the proposal be upheld by delegates, he said, we will resign from the party but there are so many ways for killing a cat and we will decide on what to do when the need arises.
