The founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addae Odike says the former Brong-Ahafo Regional minister and MP for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku is a better person to lead the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on Power News on Tuesday, the business man urged the delegates of NDC not to give the former president the nod to lead the party again. "If he [Mahama] leads them, the party will not win power...I am not a member of the NDC but as a Ghanaian, if he eventually leads the country, whatever decision he'll take as a president will affect me."

Nana Akufo-Addo beat John Mahama with 5,716,026 representing 53.35 percent while the incumbent President polled 4,713, 277 representing 44.40 percent. Some Ghanaians termed the NDC's loss as humiliating with some saying the former president should not contest to lead the party in 2020.

A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Aggrey-Darko believes Mr Mahama is very popular in the NDC, making it look like he is the best candidate for the party ahead of the next elections. But Mr Odike believes Ghanaians will not take the former president serious if he stages a come back.

"Looking at how John Mahama mismanaged Ghana, he cannot do any thing different from the mess he created in the country that almost ran down the economy," Odike said.

To him the Asunafo North MP will be a best candidate than Mr Mahama wjo is being imposed on the largest opposition party.

"I am not choosing anyone but the former Brong-Ahafo Regional minister is a fine gentleman who can lead the party," he said after noting those who have hinted of joining the flagbearer race are eligible," he told Power FM's Piesie Okrah.
