Former Chief of Defence Staff under the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC), Brigadier Nunoo Mensah (rtd) says the activities of vigilantism should not be defended by anyone.

The outspoken former military officer in an interview with Kwame Tutu said, he is glad with what people have said regarding vigilantism.

‘’ We have to learn from our mistakes. Nobody should defend such an action. I won’t support it, but so far, I am glad with what people have said; and what the president have done so far. The IGP has declared war on vigilantism. We have to learn from our mistakes, we don’t have to repeat the same mistakes in the past. It makes no sense to equalize this lawlessness rather, we have to learn from the past and move forward.’’

The activities of vigilante groups he stressed would escalate if not checked.

‘’We have to punish those engaged in the lawlessness to serve as a deterrent to others. We cannot shield them for their crime.’’

He said the fine by the Kumasi Circuit Court on the 13 Delta Force members cannot be described as lenient since they showed remorse after escaping lawful custody and subsequently turning themselves in.

Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah decried the manipulation of the security services by politicians especially when political party supporters violate the law.

‘’We do not have to manipulate the security system. We should allow them to be independent since that will ensure stability,’’ he added.

When asked if there could be a way where heads of the various security services, would be appointed by their own service personnel, he said it is possible but added, the appointments by the president is done with consultation and so I do not see anything wrong with that.
