Kufuor's One-Week Vanishing Act

…Did He Go For A Secret Surgery Or He Just Went Having Fun At The Taxpayer’s Expense?

President John Agyekum Kufuor left Accra on Friday 14th September, 2007, for Ottawa, Canada, ostensibly on an official visit that was to see him hold bilateral talks with Canadian Prime Minister, Mr. Stephen Harper and the Governor-General, Ms Michaelle Jean.

President Kufuor was also supposed to meet with officials of the aluminium giant, ALCAN, which has proposed to build a bauxite refinery in Ghana.

But for some inexplicable reason none of the scheduled engagement came off as scheduled.

Indeed, indications are that President Kufuor may not have arrived in Ottawa at all. All efforts to get the Ministry of Information to provide an official explanation for why the President’s schedules were cancelled and what the President was doing for the one week that he was away, have proven unsuccessful.

Several telephone calls to the Deputy Minister of Information could not elicit any explanation as each time that this paper calls the Deputy Minister he was unable to answer our questions because he was in one meeting or another.

But speculations are rife as to why the President’s scheduled programmes were cancelled. Some speculations have it that the President’s schedules were cancelled to enable him undergo an urgent medical treatment.

This speculation appears to be gaining grounds in view of media reports that President Kufuor may have been poisoned.

But more cynical speculations have it that the President simply decided to get out of the country so as to stay away from the disasters that are afflicting his country men and women.

On his CV, John Agyekum Kufuor listed “traveling” as his hobby, and ever since he fortuitously became the President of Ghana, he has not hesitated to breathe life into his hobby.

At the last count John Agyekum Kufuor had traveled out of Ghana at least 125 times since he was sworn-in as President.

And whiles Kufuor travels, Ghana, the country that elected him as its President, is reeling under the pressure of disaster after disaster.

Just like Emperor Nero, who partied while Rome burnt, Emperor Kufuor is also not bothered about what is happening in Ghana and prefers to travel whiles Ghana “burns”.

Indeed, Ghana is burning, both literally and figuratively, as gas stations are now blowing up, wrecking havoc in its wake.

Obviously, when the over 22+ NPP flagbearer-wannabes say to Ghanaians that they want to be given the mandate to continue with the “good works” of Emperor Kufuor, Ghanaians should be wide awake to the kinds of “good works” that is being talked about.
