Leanier Addy, the chairperson of the Black Queens management committee, says even though the heavy 11—0 drubbing the team suffered at the hands of their German counterparts last Friday was embarrassing, it served a good purpose for her side.
According to her, the match, irrespective of the scoreline, was to help the Queens identify their strengths and weaknesses as they build up for the 2016 African Women’s Championship (AWC) later this year, and that was achieved.
In an interview with the Graphic Sports on the team’s return from Germany on Tuesday, Miss Addy said: “Of course, we are all disappointed by the heavy defeat, but at least, it helped us to identify our strength and weakness, and that was a good exercise.”
“Unfortunately, there are no excuses. We lost to a very strong side who have also been preparing for their Olympic Games since January. We only trained for just some few days before the trip.
“Irrespective of the embarrassment the scoreline may look, the exposure and chance given the players is immeasurable. At least the lows and highs will help the coach find the solution to the problems identified.”
Fielding almost the first team, the Queens conceded nine goals in the first half, including an own goal by Cynthia Abobea, with the Germans scoring two more goals in the second half to make it 11-0.
The Germans had used the exercise to round up their preparations off the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. As the Queens returned home, the Germans also headed for Rio.
