Ghana Wheelchair Basketball Federation General Secretary Wilson Agbasi is bemused by the apparent discrimination towards disabled persons in Ghana following the latest challenge to hit the West African country’s national male basketball team.
He made the statement in reaction to Ghana’s Ministry of Youth and Sports seeming reluctant stance to issue money to fund the team’s impending to South Africa to compete in the African World Cup qualifiers from November 18 to November 28.
The Sports Ministry has gone ahead to request the team withdraw its participation from the tournament that is the sole path to next year’s World Cup due to be held in Germany.
Reacting to the dire situation where the Ministry doesn’t look prepared to foot the $10,700 bill needed for the trip, Agbesi deemed the team’s treatment as discriminatory on disabled persons in the West African country.
He stated his amazement of people making it possible for disabled persons to suffer such discriminatory treatment. His comments look justified considering Ghana’s Sports Ministry was largely responsible for catering to the country’s National Under 17 World and Africa Cup recent respective campaigns.
The Black Chariots-Ghana’s Wheelchair Basketball Team- is in line with countries like Angola and Zimbabwe for a spot in Germany.
