Prince Amartey
Ailing and neglected boxing hero Prince Amartey is virtually dying on his feet now as he waits in yet another promise from the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) to rehabilitate him.
The septuagenarian, who won bronze for Ghana in the middleweight division at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, has been suffering from mental health problems since he left the ring.
The former corporal of the Ghana Army who ekes out a living by working as a sweeper at a private health facility in Ho is losing weight rapidly.
This was readily evident when ‘The Times Sports’ encountered him again at Ho-Hliha last week.
Several appeals by Amartey to the state for help over the years, has fallen on deaf ears.
“I was always there for my country, but my country is not there for me now”, Amartey says all the time.
About two months ago, the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr. Maxwell Blagodzi announced that the VRCC will rehabilitate the Amartey within a matter of weeks.
That promise is, however, yet to materialize.
Amartey, who has no guaranteed meals, still cherishes a dream to study music in the university.
