Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC), GRA Ladies, presented their glamorous trophy to the management and authorities of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) weeks after winning the ultimate at the recent African Hockey Club championship hosted in Accra, Ghana.
It was an exciting and emotional moment at the Theodosia Okoh hockey stadium when GRA ladies emerged winners in the women’s category beating Telkom to give Ghana her first ever gold in the competition. Mavis Boatemaa’s exceptional display during the tournament earned her the enviable Women’s Best Player award to add to GRA’s laurels.
At an event held at the forecourt of the GRA head office in Accra, Technical Advisor for GRA, Henry Yentumi revealed that a feat as such wouldn’t be earned easily if the team had not shown enough dedication, passion and hard work. He also stressed that the teams trip to South Africa to prepare for the games is the reason they performed greatly in their category.
The GRA Men also won bronze in the male category. The Men kept their composure and shuttered Trustees aim for the Bronze medal.
On his behalf, the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Robert Sarfo Mensah commended GRA for supporting the development of sports in Ghana and pleaded with the General Commissioner of GRA to help the so called “lesser known sports”.
According to the Sports Head of GRA, Ebenezer Frimpong, they exceeded their 2017 target in sports in all categories namely Hockey, Basketball, Athletics and Soccer.
“All these sporting disciplines participated in about 29 competitions and I can say we won 27 in all. As a unit we had a target of winning 26 and I can say we have exceeded it. We will also ensure that these performance will also reflect in our core duties as tax collectors,” he said.
Emmanuel Kofi Nti, General Commissioner of GRA said plans are far advanced in participating in High School sports to help discover and nurture unripe talents.
“Going forward we want to participate in the Secondary School level sports that they do and as we do so it will be registered in their subconscious minds and when the GRA comes after them to pay their tax when they become adults they will recall that ten years down the line GRA helped them when they needed them the most,” Kofi Nti emphasized.
