Gloria Akuffo Vetting Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate, Gloria Akuffo

The Second Vice Chairperson of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Susan Adu-Amankwah, has described as “hypocrisy” the barrage of criticisms levelled at Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate Gloria Akuffo over her revelation that she has two kids despite never being married.

Introducing herself to the Appointments Committee when she appeared before it on Saturday 21 January for vetting, Ms Akuffo said: “I have two children, never been married.”

This did not go down well with a section of the public who took to social media to urge President Nana Akufo-Addo to withdraw her nomination on the grounds of morality, adding that she would be a bad example to young girls.

But Ms Adu-Amankwah, who spoke to Moro Awudu on Class FM’s Executive Breakfast Show on Monday January 23, argued that such social perceptions were wrong.

“I guess maybe it is our societal orientation but it is more [of] hypocrisy than anything else,” She said.

For her, there was no point being judgemental of the nominee when critics have no idea of the circumstances under which the former Deputy Attorney General had the children.

She wondered why men who have children by different women or have children out of wedlock are not subjected to the same “standards” of morality.

Additionally, she added that an Attorney General’s job description has no bearing on one’s marital status or that they have children.

In Ms Adu-Amankwah’s view, having children without being married will not affect Ms Akufo’s ability to execute her role in any way and it was time Ghanaians shunned such mentality.
