The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has criticised President Nana Akufo-Addo over the size of his government despite promising a lean administration prior to the 2016 general elections.

He was of the view that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was against the number of government appointees in the previous government led by John Dramani Mahama yet went ahead to even have more than that number.

This, he said, was “unacceptable” considering the backlash the then NDC government received when the NPP was in opposition.

He was concerned that such a large number of government appointees would translate to a huge amount of public funds being spent on emoluments and suggested that salaries and other perks associated with the job be reduced.

“Increasing the size of government will mean spending of too much money to run the country… NPP mentioned that they will cut down on government. Unfortunately, they are increasing the numbers,” he indicated.

For him, Ghanaians deserve better and the government must justify to citizens why they have taken such an action contrary to their own promise.

“They have let down the masses… they should come out to explain to us,” he noted on Starr FM’s Morning Starr in an interview with Francis Abban.
