Former Black Stars defender Joe Addo, who is now the
International Relations Director of Berekum Chelsea believes the club have done
well to revive Ghanaian interest and pedigree in the African Champions’ League.
No Ghanaian side have come close to this stage since Hearts
of Oak won the title in 2000 and the nation’s two slots have been reduced to
one but not Chelsea. Despite failing to beat Al Ahly to fall further behind in
the race for semi final tickets from Group B, Joe Addo reckons Chelsea have
done well for a team playing at this level for the first time.
Addo is also quick to divert any focus on Chelsea star
striker Emmanuel Clottey who has banged in 12 goals in 10 games and is close to
breaking Stephen Worgu’s CAF Champions’ League all time record of 13 goals.
“Clottey has done very well throughout the competition, he’s
complementing us by scoring goals for the team. It’s a united front and we
don’t want to mention one or two players. It’s a team of young players and we want
them to play for each other,” Joe Addo told Supersport’s Soccer Africa
programme at the Accra Sports Stadium.
He added: “We are trying to make our nation proud and we are
happy with the way we have played in this tournament. We still have two games
more that if we win, we will qualify for the semi finals, so we are not
panicking.”
Chelsea captain Abdul Basit Mohammed has meanwhile has urged
fans of the Berekum club to remain optimistic. Basit said: “As they were able
to come here and draw, we can also go to Zamalek and draw or win.
“It’s not over yet and we thank God as we have our last game
at home, it’s all still in our hands. We will work hard to return from Zamalek
