It is not always that a political leader will stand at a podium in front of his peers to advise them to get rid of some bad elements. I hope Our new President gives it attention.
What amazes us all is the following :
Almost a month into office and this President is running around the nation seemingly thanking people for some history as if he is afraid to sit in an office to man the day-to-day administrative duties and critical issues facing the nation. Why ? Some say he is afraid he will be haunted by the man who was let die without proper care while others say he uses the tour as a state paid opportunity to campaign for Presidency. Whichever way it turns long lines and disgust is spreading across the nation over lack of some basics, notably liquidified gas, which need leadership intervention. Didnt he direct that ECG provide lights to a small village community ? Well we need Gas in Ghana Mr President.
Moral questions like dedicated services to the nation devoid of corruption and selfishness must be a central focus in our educational pursuits. The entire nation must be dressed anew to shed off our institutional garments of corruption and cultural attitude of condoning wrongdoings. But we must start from the cradle into our higher institutions. How do we do that ? Build a wall of preventive institutions and mindsets.
PREVENTIVE INSTITUTIONS :
We must set up a statutory powered unit separate and independent from the Attorney General's office to deal with high level prosecutorial issues. This Independent Prosecutor must bear uninfluenced stature insulated from political or executive control to deal with its assigned duties. The duties must include monitoring of Governmental obligations and fulfillment of such obligations as prescribed by assignment and contract. His office and capacity must be absolutely independent to deal with the seemingly untouchables who create cancerous economic losses to the nation.
TRANSFORMATION OF MINDSETS :
This task requires strong education. Accountable Government, under Kwame Inkrumah, was a much respected subject placed under his Ideological Institute where periodic ministerial and public official trainings helped to change corrupt minds . Probity, accountability and respect for public service formed central themes at each lecture.
Mass Education, using wave access like radios and television in addition to billboards and lectures, will serve as critical medium of transformation.
SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES
Children and students must be taught to stay aloof from corrupt practices and be aware of their consequences.
Above all our leaders and public officials must lead the way. It is rumoured out that the President owns a jet which is under camaflouge as his brothers. It this turns to be true then we must seriously reconsider him as a suitable choice to lead us.
Nana's pursuit to make our high schools free, although difficult to achieve,is a good start which must be given serious attention. No nation succeeds without high ventures. America went to the moon under clouds of doubts and impossibilty. We are not talking about changing a man into a woman here in Ghana. We may one day reap a result of minds free from corruption and greed. Give the child education and you may hand him tools of national success. Let us grow out of ignorance lest the Chinese will always be hired to dig our own graves for us. Maybe more than nine graves !
