UNICOF to strike

The Union of Industry, Commence and Finance Workers UNICOF is to embark on a strike in the next few days over merchant bank’s refusal to reinstate its local union chairman.

UNCIOF announced this at a news conference Tuesday.

The labour commission directed Merchant Bank to reinstate Reverend Jonas Koranteng-Smart for wrongful dismissal.

Speaking to JOYBUSINESS after the conference, General Secretary, Francis Davoh says they will stop at nothing to ensure the right thing is done.

“We are definitely going to very soon embark on an industrial-action if management does not comply with the decision. We have done whatever it takes, we’ve talked behind the scenes we’ve tried to persuade the authorities to comply with the decision. Nobody is happy engaging in this but if that’s what we would have to do for justice and fair-play then so be it” he said.

Mr. Davoh also makes a strong case for the board and management of Merchant bank to also be dismissed.

UNICOF is made up of workers in industry, manufacturing, commerce and finance sector.

Meanwhile, the Trade Union Congress has reiterated its full backing for UNICOF’s planned action. The Secretary General, Kofi Asamoah spoke to JOY-BUSINESS.

“Its an issue that nobody should be playing with because its touches on the real functional role of trade unions in the country. So if UNICOF is engaging those in authority yet nothing is coming out of it, it cannot be waiting unending and so they have our support” he noted.
