Melcome Disaster - A lesson for Lawyers
Author: Hassan Ali Ganda Posted: 2012-11-09 04:45:18 Going forward the General Legal Council must make it a disciplinary offence for a lawyer to prepare a conveyance or a tenancy agreement (of two years or more) with respect to a building of more than two storeys without seeing a building permit and keeping a copy on his office file for at least 12 years
Shame on all our Leaders
Author: Agbeko Charles Posted: 2012-11-09 05:09:16 It’s so inconceivable that the mayor of Accra should indicate to the public that the owner of the building had no permit. In any civilized society, he should have resigned before making that unfortunate statement. Whose responsibility was it to ensure the building had a permit. Just to score cheap political points, they have decided to use the director at the GWDA as a scapegoat. If president Mahama had been a strong leader, he should have fired the AMA boss right in front of the press, and this would have certainly won him the election.
In Ghana one cannot secure an ECG meter without first producing a building permit. The ECG boss must be sacked as well. All they do is sit in their air-conditioned offices and drink Lipton whiles fondling the breast and buttocks of young service personnel.
Someone complained of traffic on the N1 due to poor traffic light management. The AMA boss wanting to check this went to there at 10 am when everyone was in their office and the road was expected to be bare. Currently fences are being erected to prevent people from crossing the road. In that regard when one want to cross the road from the chabaa end, you will have to board a car to Kwashieman, cross the footbridge and then board another car to Chabaa. And we claim we have leaders in this country. a visit to the interchange at Mallam junction shows weeds growing on top of the interchange because we have allowed silt to gather on it. Obviously once you talk about it, we will quickly address it by going NDC, NPP. The fools we are.

Melcom Disaster
Author: JOHN KOFI ANNAN Posted: 2012-11-09 06:08:42 It is shocking to hear this. My condolence to the families of the lost ones and best wishes to the ones rescued alive. There is no need investigating into this. Melcom should take the blame on the following grounds:
They should have done all necessary checks to know whether the building is ok for housing heavy equipment.
Know where to place/store heavy equipment. Heavy equipments are usually stored/placed on the ground floor.
Assessment on the fitness of the building for commercial use in the future.
I do not think MELCOM will rent a building without permit so AMA should better tell us something good. Why should some people start politics with this. It is a matter of national concern where we need to strengthen our institutions for effective delivery of best services. I wish everyone a peaceful election 2012. Long live Ghana!

Author: CHE Posted: 2012-11-09 07:56:56 THE FATALITIES COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE IF THIS HAD HAPPENED LATER IN THE DAY WHEN TRAFFIC IN THE MALL IS HIGHER.OUR JOURNALISTS SHOULD MENTION THE NAMES OF THE CONTRACTING BUILDERS AND ARCHITECTS SO THAT PUBLIC OPINION IS FORMED ABOUT THEIR PROFESSIONALISM

Melcom disaster
Author: Akua Nyarko Posted: 2012-11-09 08:20:41 how can the onwer of the building put the blame on Melcom? he should have made sure that that building is safe for purpose and also AMA & Lands Department should also take some blame. There are so many un-authorised buildings in the country and the bribery is so rife it's a dis grace Why should people lose their lives before our authorities/leaders wake up
WHY ISREAL MUST BE CAREFUL.
Author: USMAN Posted: 2012-11-09 08:56:11 The Isrealis in the country helping with the rescue efforts must be careful because they risk being sued by any fuckin Palenian who takes his case to any of our useless courts for human rights abuses. This may lead to their equipment being seized as done to the Argentine Libertad warship.

why ghanaians to do not go for building
Author: KWAAKU Posted: 2012-11-09 15:24:51 Are Ghanians asking themselves why potential landlords and house owners to do not go for building permits? This is what our journalists should be finding out. Its such a cumbersome bureacratic and corrupt process that leaves you tired angry and frustrated because in the end it you either do not get the building permit after the numerous go come go come or you get the building permit after three years. Its not that potential builders are afraid of any inspection or any amout that they have to pay for the permit the process is simply useless. Our journalists can do some investigative reporting on this they should try securing a building permit and they willl understand what I am talking about. Any way of Oko Vanderpuije is concerned about buildings that pose risks to the public then he should tell us what he intends doing about the UTC building located right in the heart of the central business district in Accra, Is he not aware that that building is a disaster waiting to happen. Is he not aware that part of that building a huge concrete beam from the last floor of that old building fell to the ground right where a huge crowd gather to sell on weekdays. This incident thank God it happened on a sunday morning about two months ago so there were no . But our journalists should take Oko Vanderpuije to UTC building and show him the huge cracks and ask him questions. Anybody can talk to those who sell around the UTC building and they will tell u about the risk that that building pose to people who go through that area every minute.
Face saving gimmick, Accra Mayor
Author: Yaw Posted: 2012-11-09 15:31:11 Ghana is the only country where you are made to feel like a criminal for owning a or building a posh house. It is either on a waterway and now you dont have a building permit. Then the same ama authorities turn around and ask you to pay huge bribes and if dont your house that you have toiled to build is demolished. I will never vote for NDC because of Oko vanderpuije who has a penchant for destroying containers and slums and buildings for no apparent reason. Destroying Nana Boadu's buildings will not only be a knee Jerk recation but also a face saving gimmick by the AMA boss. and off course he will be antagonising more people. Mind you this man is just waiting for NDC to win the elections then he will destroy sodom and gomorrah at agbogbloshie Nima and also chase market around. Abaei. Only fools will vote for NDC and Oko vanderpuije.
