Land guards kill one; injure several others

A twenty-four year old man was killed by land guards while five others sustained gunshot wounds at Ayikai Dobro near Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality on Friday.

The deceased, Sulley Amartey, and others were erecting pillars on a plot of land when land guards opened fire on them.

The Managing Director of Salley Properties, Ibrahim Salley, the estate developer, who was supervising work at the site when the land guards attacked, told Joy News that after an initial confrontation between his workers and the land guards, the land guards later emerged from the bushes and opened fire on them.

Sulley Amartey, he said, was declared dead after he was rushed to Amasaman Government Hospital.

The Ga West District Police Commander, Superintendent I.K. Asante confirmed the incident to Joy News and said one person has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

"We've been to the scene and we retrieved some empty shells at the scene. The body yesterday (Friday) was taken to the police morgue and certain names have been mentioned to us...for now only one arrest has been made. "

He said the police are still interrogating the suspect.
