Member of Council of State calls for backyard gardening

Mr Emmanuel Adzei Annang, Member, Council of State, has called on Ghanaians to do backyard gardening to supplement their income, enhance their nutrition as well as help children to appreciate the noble art of farming.

According to him, tomato, cabbage, garden eggs, cassava and plantain can be cultivated at the backyard where people struggle to keep it tidy.

Mr Annan gave the advice at the Tema Metropolitan Farmers’ Day which was celebrated on the theme:” Reducing post-harvest losses, sustainable food security and nutrition,” where Mr Osmanu Issah, a 62 –year- old man, was adjudged the overall best farmer of the Municipality.

Mr Isaac Asai Odamtten, Metropolitan Chief Executive, said post-harvest losses are national perennial problem which must be solved by all means. He said food should not go waste when some people sleep on an empty stomach.

He said strategies should be employed to preserve and store harvested produce to ensure food security. Mr Issah advised farmers to see farming as a business and employ well remunerated able and capable men to maximise productivity.
