Importers beware of drivers - Police

The Greater Accra Police is warning importers of goods and foodstuffs to be weary of the kind of drivers they hire to transport their goods from the ports.

The advice comes on the back of a plot uncovered by the police between some truck drivers and criminals, who steal imported goods under the pretext of the trucks breaking down.

According to the police, majority of these drivers ply the Tema-Accra route.

In an interview with Citi News, the Greater Accra Police PRO, DSP Freeman Tettey explained that “when the people contract these vehicles to offload the goods, particularly rice from Tema, they will deliberately tell the owners that the vehicles have broken down and arrange with some miscreants to come and steal the rice.”

He therefore warned importers to closely monitor the activities of their drivers to ensure their merchandise are intact upon delivery.

DSP Tettey also revealed that some drivers and other persons have been arrested in connection with this practice upon a tip off.
