Mad rush for Ashanti NPP forms as candidate pays ¢20,000

There is a mad rush for regional executive nomination forms in the Ashanti region as New Patriotic Party opens free nominations for regional executive elections slated for January 25 this year.

One candidate widely tipped for the Ashanti Regional Chairmanship position, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as 'Chairman wontumi' paid over 20 thousand Ghana Cedis to cover the fees of any person willing to contest an executive position.

Scores of supporters today gathered at the party’s regional office in Bantama amidst cheers as some candidates picked forms.

The Regional Chairman of the party, Frederick Fredua Antoh, who is also vying for the National Vice Chairmanship position of the party told LUV FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor lots of people are picking the forms because its free.

He said 18 people picked nomination forms for various positions shortly after the contest was opened.

"One person for Chairman, four people for Secretary ship, two for Regional regional treasurer and one person for regional organiser..."

He thanked the chairman aspirant for paying for the forms but said the election will be well regulated.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako is expected to face a stiff contest from the former deputy Attorney General of the NPP Osei Prempeh.

When he picked his forms today, Chairman Wontumi, said he will safeguard the party's electoral fortunes once voted into power.

Meanwhile, the NPP’s director of elections Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah told Joy News more people are interested in contesting for positions in the party because they want to join the journey to redeem this country.

He said the party has resolved many of the outstanding cases militating against a successful organisation of elections adding the elections will be peaceful.
