CMA Group appoints Deputy GM in Ghana

CMA CGM Group, the world’s third largest container shipping group, has appointed Mr Geoffrey Nyarko Cole as Deputy General Manager (GM) of Delmas Shipping Ghana.

Until his appointment, which took effect on January 1, 2014, Mr Cole was the Country Commercial Director responsible for the strategic management of the dual brands DELMAS & CMA CGM in Ghana, since September 2013.

Mr Cole started his shipping career with SDV Ghana (agents for DELMAS) on January 1, 1999 as Statistics Analyst and within one year, he successfully implemented various statistical tools for process control, which led to significant improvement in productivity across key sectors of the company.

In September 2001, Mr Cole left SDV Ghana and joined Hull Blyth Group as Commercial Manager. He was tasked with the responsibility to introduce the CMA CGM brand in Ghana and establish a Commercial Department for the newly created African Steamship – a division of Hull Blyth.

By August 2004, he had mobilised and led a team to successfully position CMA CGM as the second largest carrier (in terms of market share) from Asia to Ghana.

Through hard work and consistent high performance, Mr Cole was adjudged the Best Performing Commercial Manager in Africa for three consecutive years by the CMA CGM Group. He represented the company at various conferences and seminars in Africa, Europe and Asia.

He established a Business Development Unit (BDU) to provide evidence-informed recommendations on industry competitors for strategic marketing decisions by Hull Blyth. He was promoted to Shipping Manager for African Steamship in February 2006.

In July 2007, when CMA CGM completed the acquisition of DELMAS, Mr Cole was appointed Commercial Manager for Delmas Shipping Ghana, CMA CGM Group, and was instrumental in the setting up and integration of the consequent joint venture.

He became the first Ghanaian and African (south of the Sahara) to be appointed as an expatriate by the world’s third largest container shipping group and was subsequently posted to China as Trade Manager responsible for South China from February 2011 to August 2013.

With 15 years of shipping experience, 13 years of which were in top management positions with international exposure, 40-year-old Mr Cole assumes his new role at a transitional period of strategic reorganisation and development of Delmas Shipping Ghana to offer improved services to customers and ensure growth in market share.

Mr Cole is a trained teacher and a product of the University of Ghana, Legon, where he studied Statistics. He is also a Chartered Logistician and holds an MBA (Marketing) from the University of Leicester, UK. He is married with five children.
