Fire Service failed to show up – Kotobaabi market traders

Some residents of the Kotobaabi night market in Accra have lambasted the Ghana National Fire Service for failing to show up at a fire scene that destroyed two shops on Saturday.

Eye witnesses reported that the fire started about 7am and through the efforts of local residents, the fire was doused.

According to owner of one of the shops, Faustina Atuaa, the fire destroyed her property worth about GHC 10,000.

Meanwhile, some local residents who helped put out the fire told Citi News, the fire service did not show up after calling them about 30 times.

Nana Yaw Aidoo, a resident said: “We were here for an hour but none of them showed up. We didn’t call the police though but we called the Fire Service but they didn’t come. We called them around 7:30am but up till 12pm, they were still not here.”

Narrating how the fire was detected, Aidoo explained that “we saw smoke coming out so we tried to break in to see what it was and we realized it was fire so we had to come here and fetch water and we all tried to do something.”

This is the second market fire to occur this year after following a series of market fires in 2013.
