Female artistes perform for International Women’s Day

Nigerian musician Diana Bada, will on Friday, March 7 enchant crowds with a powerful performance at the Alliance Française in Accra to mark the 2014 edition of International Women’s Day.

With a unique mash up of ‘Afro Soul’, a blend of Hip Hop, Jazz and Reggae music, she would showcase an amazing talent that has endeared her to fans in several countries throughout the world.

She was part of the 2008 edition of MTV Base/ Zain Advance Warning that had artistes like MI, Kel, Terry G, Durella, Waje and Terry Tha Rapman, among others.

Bada was also part of the Gimme Shot Crew touring in Europe as well as the lead vocalist for the Tripanation Band.

French and Haitian singer songwriter Cae would open the concert by performing a tribute to iconic musician and activist Nina Simone. Featuring several Ghanaian women artists and vocalists, this ephemeral vocal tapestry is entitled ‘Women of Soul’.

It is the first composition of a workshop Cae would be conducting during her ongoing artistic residency at the Alliance Française in Accra, is dedicated to celebrating artistic expressions women of the diaspora.

On the same day, an exhibition by Kis Keya, Sena Ahadji and Zohra Opoku, whose work spans the medium of textile objects, fashion installations, photography, street intervention and recently also video would open at the same venue.

Kinna Likimani, founder and executive director of After School Ghana, an NGO that works to improve the educational and social well-being of rural and urban disadvantaged children would facilitate thought-provoking conversations and book readings with a number of writers including Alba Simprim, Boakyewaa Glover and Yewande Omotoso.

On Thursday, March 6, a lecture titled “Our Voices: Breaking Boundaries, Creating Change” would be held with a dynamic group of women speakers. These include TV presenter and fashion designer, Benny Bonsu and Country Manager of Microsoft Ghana, Otema Yirenkyi, among others would explore the voices of women leading the way in Ghana.
