Refuse piles up in Accra Central Business District

Heaps of refuse are piling up at the Accra Central Business District, exposing traders and buyers to serious health hazards.

Some parts of the Kantamanto, Rawlings Park and Makola areas have been engulfed by these huge piles of refuse.

The areas are also engulfed in a strong stench emanating from the heap.

At the Rawlings Park, the refuse had virtually taken over the street, blocking access roads for drivers, shoppers and pedestrians.

Traders could not stop complaining about the mountains of refuse in front of their shops when the Daily Graphic visited the area on Friday and Saturday.

Passers-by and customers covered their noses with handkerchiefs to avoid inhaling the stench from the refuse.

“The stench is unbearable but because we are doing business we have to bear it and continue with business,” Madam Comfort Kyei, a trader, said.

According to the traders, the refuse has been there for weeks, although they had made moves to get the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Zoomlion to get it cleared.

Despite the health implications, some traders were spotted busily selling foodstuffs around the refuse and soliciting customers.

Although they expressed their worry, the traders had displayed their wares around the overflowing waste containers.
