MUSIGA is not attractive enough for us to join - Gallaxy

Talented music duo, Gallaxy, made up of David Adjeiwoda (Kwesi Dav) and Ransford Ohene (Bra Chiky), say they have no intentions of joining the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA).

The decision, they claim, is due to the fact that the musicians' union lacks the requisite structures needed to seek and promote the well-being of musicians in Ghana.

MUSIGA is an umbrella group that unites all musicians in Ghana irrespective of their music genre but Gallaxy says while they hold no grudges against the musician body; they feel it is not doing enough for musicians.

"We don't think we will be members unless they put in certain structures. As an industry, they need to have a set of rules that will guide whoever is a member like incentives and structures that will promote and give artistes good market but they are not doing such things," Kwesi Dav told Myjoyonline.com in an interview.

Asked what they make of Obour's administration, which has managed to get the musicians' union GH2 million from the government, the group said, "We are just hearing from them but we are not seeing anything physically."

According to them, "until we see something like artistes [beginning] to get something from what they are doing because we have a lot of artistes in Ghana who as at now don't have anything to prove for their work they've done all these years."

"Our old artistes, up to now some of them cannot afford three [square] meals and then we the youth [who] are coming, we don't want to face the same problem so MUSIGA has to" solve some of these issues "before we can be part because it's like you joining an organisation which does not have any plan for you, you [will be] just be wasting your time," Kwesi Dav stressed.

Gallaxy, who has commercially been in the industry for the past three years, said they will only reverse the decision "if things are put in order," because "some of the artistes in MUSIGA are even complaining..."

The duo grew up in the same neighbourhood, Ashaiman-Jericho in the Geater Accra region but officially agreed to merge their musical talents in 2004.

Gallaxy currently has five songs, ‘Chop Money' ft Guru, 'Asie Ma Me', 'Wodo Nti', 'Boko Boko' (Slowly), 'Highlife Agogo', and 'Tweaaa' to their credit. They also have three videos, 'Chop Money', 'Wodo Nti', and 'Boko Boko'.

For an album, the group said, "It's not part of our plan now... If you release an album, somebody releases a single and gets more money than you releasing the album," and that "nobody is releasing albums now," because it is not beneficial releasing them now.

They say they are inspired by nature and things happening around them and look forward to doing collaborations with some local and international acts.

Gallaxy expressed their displeasure over failure to receive a single nomination for this year's Ghana Music Awards which is scheduled on May 3 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

They lamented that, "the awards organizers have their own criteria they use in choosing whoever they want to put in the awards scheme," and that, "maybe Gallaxy does not meet that criteria, maybe we are not there yet."

They believed that their song 'Wodo Nti' deserves some nominations in this year's awards including the 'High life Song of the Year' category.
