You cannot stop our demonstration – TUC tells gov't, police

General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Kofi Asamoah, is warning of dire consequences if the police try to stop their planned nationwide demonstration on Thursday, July 24.

“It is important that nobody put any spook in the wheels of the determined workers who want to express their frustrations about the worsening socio-economic conditions in the country,” he stressed.

Mr. Asamoah’s warning comes after the police administration advised organized labour to hold its planned nationwide demonstration on a regional basis.

Acting Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, DSP Cephas Arthur said, “we will not be in the position to provide adequate protection for the demonstrators, as well as other people who are going about their duties peacefully and so we suggested to them to hold the demonstration on a regional basis to enable the police mobilize enough personnel to provide security and protection for the demonstration.”

But Kofi Asamoah in an interview with Adom News expressed shock at the flimsy excuse by the police.

He noted the police can provide security during May Day celebration which is held nationwide; thus they cannot claim not to have personnel when workers want to protest the worsening economic conditions in the country.

Kofi Asamoah said though the police formally informed them about the new development, nobody can stop them from going on a peaceful protest.

“I really do not see their [police] problem [because] for instance when its May Day, we do it in all regions, and the police ensure that all necessary security measures are done without any problem,” he added.
