Choice Film Awards launched to promote local cinema

An online film awards aimed primarily at recognising hard-working local producers and increasing their revenue base to a worldwide audience organized by inGenius Africa, ReelAfrican and YouTube has been launched in Accra.

Dubbed the Choice Film Awards, the scheme is a competition for Ghanaian movies and is being hosted on the ReelAfrican YouTube Channel to also help in showcasing films made in any language and of any genre.

Managing Director of inGenius Africa, Kwame Boadi said at the launch ceremony in Accra last week that their travels around the country made them better appreciate how well audiences love films in local languages, alongside productions in the English language.

He said the realisation triggered the idea for the Choice Film Awards, which is being organised in collaboration with the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG).

According to Mr Boadi, over 300 local productions have been submitted, and the eventual winner would be the film most watched by the public. There’s a prize of $2,000 for the winning film.

The Technical Director of inGenius Africa, Oliver Safo, also added that the competition site could be accessed from any internet –ready device including smartphones and computer tablets.

Mr Safo pointed out that the award scheme is open to all Ghanaian film producers and the cut-off date for submission of films is August 31.

The awards night would be telecasted live on the Internet on Saturday, November 22. The ten most watched films would be announced by September 21.

The President of FIPAG, Steve Asare Hackman commended the awards organisers for their concern for the film business in this country and urged FIPAG members to participate.
