Mayhem at NPP Headquarters

Violent protests by some aggrieved supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party has disrupted a press conference called by the party's National Chairman and General Secretary.
The Headquarters of the NPP was the scene of mayhem and violent confrontation between different factions of the party.
Some supporters of the party besieged the headquarters threatening to attack the party chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong.
The two were addressing a press conference on the recent controversy over a directive to the party's acting director of communications Perry Okudzeto to proceed on leave.
The conference had to be stopped abruptly as a result of the mayhem.
However, Joy News' Kwakye Afreh-Nuamah reports that about ten men wielding cutlasses said to be guards at the party Headquarters attempted to attack a man in a four-wheel drive parked just in front of the Headquarters.
It is not clear yet what the identity of the man in the four wheel drive is.
The Police have arrived at the scene of the incident.
Paul Afoko resumed his address at the press conference after the police intervened and calm returned to the headquarters.
He told journalists some miscreants bent on creating a bad name for the opposition party were responsible for the chaos at the party's headquarters.
The NPP Chairman said efforts were being made to obfuscate the matters discussed at the news conference and appealed to the media not to be sidetracked.
"Sometimes it takes a few good people to stand up and be counted," he stated.
The National Executive Committee of the NPP has been dogged by deep-seated mistrust breeding divisiveness and disagreement over almost every issue.
The executive who were elected at the Tamale Delegates Conference are believed to be split along the lines of their support for the flag-bearer hopefuls of the party.
Messrs Afoko and Agyapong, who supported former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen's failed attempts to lead the NPP to the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections are accused of trying to tilt the scales in his favour this time round.
