Diesel shortage leaves truck drivers at Tema port reeling

The acute shortage of gas oil in the Greater Accra Region has hit hard at haulage truck drivers at the Tema Port as they complain business is receding.

Interacting with TV3’s Josephine Frempong on Tuesday, August 19, most of the drivers complained their source of livelihood is under threat as a result of the situation.

Accra has suffered shortage of gas oil or diesel over the past five days and the situation appears to be worsening as other fuel products including premix fuel is running short, filling station managers told TV3.

“Some of the tracks are packed for three days now,” stated one truck driver at the Tema Port. “They have loaded but cannot exit [while] some have loaded and cannot come back.”

According to the drivers, the situation is hampering business as some importers are not getting their goods on time.

It is unclear when this situation will normalize as the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) says it is struggling getting letters of credit from commercial banks to get the petroleum products from vessels on high seas.
