Teacher arrested for impregnating student, 15

The Western Regional Police Command has arrested a basic school teacher in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis for impregnating one of his students.

The teacher is said to have offered to help the girl overcome her deficiency in a subject, but he took advantage of the student, lured her into the staffroom and had sex with her on two occasions resulting in the pregnancy.

According to the police, the suspected teacher, Jerry John Essilfie 32, who is currently in police custody, allegedly had sex with his 15-year-old student, (name withheld) twice in the school’s staff common room during vacation classes organized by Woode Methodist Junior High School at Essikafo-Ambantem No 2.

The police said the student approached the teacher who was Basic Design Technology and Fante teacher about her difficulty in one of his subjects.

According to the police, the teacher told the student that he would help and that during one of the vacation classes the teacher sent for her and took her to the staff common room, undressed her and had sex with her.

The victim told the police that when they returned to classes the next day, upon seeing her, the teacher repeated the act and told her not to tell anybody.

The Police said the victim and the mother always had their menses at the same time. The mother then became suspicious when her daughter failed to pick her pad. She therefore went to the pharmacy to buy a pregnancy test kit and tested her daughter to see if she naturally skipped the month or was pregnant. To her shock, the test proved her daughter was pregnant.

She confronted the daughter over who was responsible for the pregnancy, during which the student said her schoolteacher was responsible and that he slept with her twice in the school’s staff common room during vacation classes.

The issue was then reported to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service where the parents were issued with a medical form.

According the Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ms Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, the medical report confirmed that the girl was pregnant for two months.

The police on Saturday dawn arrested the suspect at his residence and will put him before court on Monday.

According to the parents, they first visited the Metro Directorate of the Ghana Education Service, where they were told there was another case of sexual misconduct involving the same teacher and another student which was being handled by the circuit supervisor.

The parents therefore proceeded to the police to lodge a complaint which led to the medical examination and arrest of Essilfie.
