The article is just splendid!

Perharps will all his talent. Atta Mills is not gifted to lead a nation such as Ghana.

In the absence of a leader with vision, Partliament and the media must be fill in the vaccum.

Rawlings and his crooks must be kept under constant surveilane by the police and the security forces as it smacks like the NDC have no democratic strategy to taking ghana forward.

There is a distinct possibility that a tug of war is going on in the NDC camp hence Atta Mills cannot focus.

THE 31ST DECEMBER 1981 REVOLUTION

ACTION ON D-DAY

We assembled near my house at Gondar Barracks Quarters, waiting for ammunition and grenades from BAD [Base Ammunition Depot at Tema]. We needed the ammunition to start the operation. At about 1.30 am, the soldiers who were to bring us the ammunition failed to turn up. I therefore suggested that we sneak through the fence nearer to the cookhouse. This, we did undetected.
We managed to capture the two mowag armoured vehicles which were on standby duties together with the twelve men on duty. This phase of the operation was nearly botched when one Pte ASOMANING on guard duty spotted us far away. He was urinating while half asleep. C. C. ADDAE rushed to him and covered his mouth.

Even though the operation involved many soldiers and ex-soldiers, the initial group that sprang the attack was myself and one AGYEKUM from Recce Regiment. We handled the two seized armoured cars. The rest of the attack group included J.J. RAWLINGS, C. C. ADDAE, AMDU, GIDIBOLOSO, Sammy AMEDEKA, GBAFFAR, Mathias KUJO and MENSAH. We had only one G3 assault rifle, one old version of the Police AK 47 and a pistol mounted on a butt, which was used by RAWLINGS. Just before mounting the operation, RAWLINGS brought out a bulletproof vest to wear. When one of the soldiers asked why he alone was protected, he argued that he got only one and it cannot be shared amongst us. More so, he was the leader and if he died, so many things would go wrong. To cheer us up he said, “gentlemen, from now on you guys are going to prosper”.
Immediately we captured the guards, we locked them up in the guardroom. Sgt ANKU, leader of the standby troop tried to resist so I gave him a dirty slap that landed him on the floor. After that the captured guards co-operated by entering the guardroom.

At the Recce Quarter Guard, we positioned one armoured car; then with RAWLINGS and C. C. ADDAE on board the other one, I drove through the Arrakan Quarter Guard and broke their barrier with force. Thereafter, I climbed into the gunners compartment and released some shots towards the Machine Gun Platoon location at 5th Battalion. Thus, we managed to disperse the soldiers at Arrakan. At this juncture, Sgt. Alolga AKATA PORE appeared on the scene with Private AMPONSAH and BANINI. RAWLINGS spoke briefly to AKATA PORE to organise the boys. We then took off to Signal Regiment and then to the Air Force Station. From time to time, I would stop the armoured car, climb into the gunners compartment, and release some shots. We managed to make our presence felt by occasionally firing to scare away whoever would want to challenge us. In all this, we were also soliciting support by shouting to the soldiers to announce the return of
J. J. RAWLINGS. Meanwhile, occasionally, RAWLINGS would ask me to stop and he would collect the keys of some private cars trailing us and deflate the tyres. He told us they were the Military Intelligence chaps. In all, we seized about six car keys from six different drivers.
At this stage, RAWLINGS told me that he wanted the Military establishment to take control and to bring sanity/discipline into the operation. He therefore asked me to drive to the residence of the CDS — Air Vice Marshall ODARTEY BARNOR. It was by now 4.00 a.m. Since combining the roles of a gunner and driver was too much, I managed to talk one Cpl. AKOSAH, who was one of our prisoners, into driving the vehicle to enable me concentrate on firing the gun. On reaching KAWO KUDI junction, we spotted the CDS in an armoured car stationed at his residence. After exchanging fire briefly with him, I suggested that we assault the place; but RAWLINGS backed down and asked us to withdraw and come another time. We therefore returned to Gondar Barracks.
Those members of our group who were under the surveillance of the MI now managed to join us. They included Eric ASARE, Braimah ISSAKA, PHARROUK, Charles OWUSU, Aliu HAMID, Baba KANKANI, AKADINA, Atta OWUSU, Dominic ADU, Isaac BOTCHWEY, Theophilus DOKU, Adam SACKEY, Halidu GYIWAH and others I cannot remember.
They all helped to make 31st December a success.
When we got back to Gondar Barracks, we saw some three dead bodies at the Recce guardroom. They were Maj. Omane COLLISON, Sgt. Azaar SEIDU and Sgt. AWUDU. RAWLINGS immediately knelt by Maj. COLLISON and expressed remorse because that was his friend. The story we were told was that Maj. Ohene ASARE and the rest of the Recce officers were planning a counter attack. They had therefore asked Maj. COLLISON and Lt. TINDANA to come and talk the soldiers down. Together with the MI they had come down to do that. Unfortunately, things turned out badly for them. From then on RAWLINGS became scared to death. He now begged me to try and get the CDS and Brig. Arnold QUAINOO to join us in the Camp. But he refused to join me again to the CDS’ house. When I got back to the CDS’ house, he had left with his whole family in the armoured vehicle. On the part of Brig. QUAINOO, instead of joining us, he hid under his bed and told his wife to inform us that he was not in. I know this because I went with GBAFFAR who heard them speak in EWE. I had orders to bring QUAINOO alive so I wanted to fire the door open but I thought of his family and changed my mind. Later when he showed up after success, Eric ASARE and myself questioned him on why he failed to report even though according to RAWLINGS he knew the D-day. He lied that he did not know it was us.
It was now about 9.00 a.m. when I reported back to RAWLINGS about the CDS and Arnold QUAINOO. He became very worried. Once again, we mounted the armoured car and went round trying to convince the soldiers in camp to join us. Those from Base Workshop and Signal Regiment told us to give them arms and ammunition. GYIWAH, myself and others broke through the 5 Battalion Armoury and Magazine and made sure to supply them. Then we blew the fire alarm to try and convince the soldiers to join; but to no avail. As at 10.00 am, we were only 33 soldiers so RAWLINGS became very worried. He told me to go and fill the armoured cars which, I did. Then he told us that the thing has failed; therefore, we were driving to COTONOU where we would seek refuge. He suggested that on reaching AFLAO, we would break through the barrier. We would return fire if fired upon until we got to Benin Republic.
At this juncture, I assumed control. C. C. ADDAE the boys and I told him that we were fighting to win and not to withdraw. I detailed GYIMAH to put an eye on him and if he made any attempt to escape or run he should gun him down. Just then, we heard that Engineers Regiment had taken control of the Airport and Air Force Station. We left a few men at Gondar and moved to recapture the positions with RAWLINGS still virtually under arrest. I put him in the other armoured car with GYIWAH and AGYEKUM guarding him. From the Air Force Station, with the captured Engineer soldiers, I headed for the Broadcasting House with RAWLINGS in tow. After capturing the broadcasting house where we lost a few men, I then signaled for RAWLINGS to be brought. I then told him to make the announcement. After that we got a lot of resistance taking Brigade Headquarters under Maj. NANTOGMAH, Engineer Regiment and MATS. The 2nd Battalion came in from TAKORADI under Lt-Col. Ofosu APPIAH to counter attack. In the end we won the day.
The battle for the Broadcasting House was tough because ADINGO and MAMBISI the policemen handling the Police armoured car were very tough and stubborn. I salute their courage.
Now, when RAWLINGS was brought to make the announcement, he was shivering so much that he pressed wrong buttons and could not make the announcement. Luckily, just then Apostle BARNABAS, editor of the Palaver appeared in a PFP car to salute us. He then went to bring within 5 minutes, one ex-Sgt AGOHA who was then a technician at the Broadcasting house. He was the one who rectified the situation for RAWLINGS to make the announcement. It was obvious that both Apostle BARNABAS and Sgt. AGOHA were aware of the operation. That is the story of the success of 31st December.
REASON FOR JOINING THE OPERATION
Immediately after the handover to President LIMANN, the senior officer with the help of the Military Intelligence decided to take revenge because most of the officers were humiliated during the AFRC era. All units were instructed to submit names of potential trouble makers especially those who actively participated in the events of June 4th soldiers were being bundled into the Army Fiat or Three tonner together with their belongings and being despatched to their hometowns on suspicion of being undisciplined. It became so rampant that RAWLINGS exploited the situation. Cpls C. C. ADDAE and DAWUTEY who were my friends in the Boys Company became victims and I sympathised with them. I was also arrested and interrogated several times on suspicion of being a friend to RAWLINGS.) Inspite of this I was still loyal to the LIMANN administration. Later on RAWLINGS contacted us over the dismissals and asked us to come together. In the latter part of the year RAWLINGS sent for me through late Cpl. Ajowiak UBLAH popularly called Jack MAHONEY. He took me to a point and GBAFFAR picked us to the ACHIMOTA FOREST. I met RAWLINGS with GYIWAH and another Northerner. He told us about the coup adding that Dr. LIMANN was in support of the plot because he could not control his Cabinet. He went on further that there was this thing called the old and new guards in the PNP and that LIMANN was not being respected because the others claimed that Imoro EGALA brought him (Dr. LIMANN) from nowhere.
RAWLINGS also made GYIMAH and me to believe that those from the Western Region were planning their own coup to oust LIMANN and put Kankam da COSTA there. Therefore Dr. LIMANN needed our co-operation so that after the ground is cool he RAWLINGS would then handover back to Dr. LIMANN. To reinforce his claim, a state protocol Mercedez Benz car drove into the Forest. RAWLINGS then excused us [myself Ajowiak UBLAH, Halidu GYIMAH and GBAFFAR]. He returned from the car after some fifteen minutes. He then said that it was the old man himself he went to meet — that is Dr. LIMANN and that he was with Chris ATIM and Alolga AKATAPORE in the car. He added that he did not want us to meet Alolga and Chris now and that at the appropriate time we shall all meet to finish plans. At this stage there was no doubt in our mind that the President was in support.
PLANNING
During the planning stage, RAWLINGS was operating in cells, therefore it was difficult to know who was who. It started with the soldiers who had assembled at the Volunteer Force Quarters to learn Tae—Kwan-Do and Karate. Then there was the 2nd Battalion group who was busted. There was the Air Force group, the 5th Battalion group. The last was the Recce Regiment group of which I was part. Because of the constitutional rule we could move freely.
REASON FOR TURNING AGAINST RAWLINGS
At the Broadcasting House on the D-Day, I asked RAWLINGS of Dr. LIMANN. He told me that he had instructed that nobody should harm LIMANN and that he would be brought into the system as soon as things got normalised. At that time I believed him because the first person RAWLINGS asked me to call to become the Air Force Commander and Chief Operations Officer was Group Captain AWUVIRI. RAWLINGS explained that to become Air Force Commander, you had to be a Pilot but we were going to change the tradition for Gp. Capt. AWUVIRI, a Navigator, to become the Air Force Commander. Although Gp. Capt AWUVIRI turned down the offer of Chief Operations Officer he later became the acting Air Force Commander. For the position of Chief Operation Officer, RAWLINGS next asked me to fetch Col. Rahman AWUDU of Signal Regiment, who became the first Chief Operations Officer. All these officers were Northerners so I believed RAWLINGS.
As the days passed by, I asked RAWLINGS about LIMANN’s position. He told me that “LIMANN has fucked himself up by attempting to run away and besides, he had turned down an offer to work with us. Immediately, I realised that some of us had been duped and used. The next thing I noticed wrong was the position of Chief Operation Officer. It was being rotated every three months but when it reached the turn of a certain tribesman of RAWLINGS to be changed, he rather made him permanent. We were supposed to be practicing participatory democracy involving the grassroot. Now, most soldiers wanted Capt. Baba AWUNI who was a good Jungle Officer to take over as Chief Operations Officer; yet RAWLINGS refused.
Again, when RAWLINGS left for LIBYA for that year’s OAU Conference, instead of handing over to Brig. Nunoo MENSAH who was the most senior member of the Council, he rather chose to hand over to Capt. Kojo TSIKATA who was an advisor simply because he was Ewe. At this stage, it was clear that RAWLINGS had a tribalistic agenda.
The last straw was the killing of the Judges. With the exception of Amartey KWEI who went round to pinpoint the houses of the judges, the actual persons who did the killing were all Ewes - AMEDEKA, DZANDU, SENYA and TEKPOR. To throw dust into peoples eyes, they wore the Northern smock on that fateful day to make it look like it was the Northerners against the Akans. When the Police started the investigations, the culprits panicked and they came to inform me about all what happened. Were they going to be sacrificed? With this information, I went to confront RAWLINGS. Why did he do that? Why only Akan judges were killed? Why did the boys wear Northern smock for the operations? “RAWLINGS replied that the whole thing was a state secret so I should keep it to myself and not discuss it with anybody” Then he added that he would send the boys to BULGARIA and CUBA on courses to enable them escape any consequences. I was disappointed.
Another issue was on a relative of Nana Konadu RAWLINGS. The woman was arrested at the Airport for attempting to smuggle out marijuana. We felt strongly that she should be used to set an example in line with the probity and integrity we were preaching. RAWLINGS instead gave us a lecture. TURKEY was getting millions of dollars from AMERICA to stop bringing marijuana to AMERICA which was destroying their children. So we should rather cultivate marijuana on large scale for export to the US. Land was acquired near NSAWAM and tractor brought for the venture. Meanwhile, the woman was set free!
On the issue of corruption, I would like to meet RAWLINGS face to face so that I can ask him what he did with all the gold, diamonds and mercury we seized from the numerous operations we undertook during the early days of the Revolution. Some of these were seized from the Syrian and Lebanese community. I was part of the squad together with Sgt. AWAAL whom RAWLINGS later killed. One Lebanese called RIYAD was giving us information, which we used for the operations against the Lebanese and Syrians. Other operations were in OBUASI. At least RAWLINGS and Wallace GBEDEMAH must explain to Ghanaians where those treasures passed!
ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT THE SITUATION
At this stage, I tried to get RAWLINGS to reason with Ghanaians and hand over to LIMANN but he refused. I was arrested on the 28th November 1982 on a frame up charge in connection with the 23rd November coup attempt. The whole Gondar was in confusion in protest against my arrest to the Castle. Lt-Col. MAHAMA who was CO 5 Battalion and Capt. Baba AWUNI from Jungle Warfare were brought to the Castle to persuade me not to overthrow the Government when released. I agreed. Then I was flown in a helicopter from the Castle to the Army Headquarters at Flag Staff House first then to Gondar Barracks where I diffused the tension by talking to the boys.
The following day, to our surprise, the Camp was surrounded and we were arrested. We were kept in incarceration for seven months. They would not release us for fear that we would overthrow the government. On June 19th 1982, we planned a jailbreak and attempted to overthrow the PNDC but failed. Jerry RAWLINGS ran away.
I attempted to cross into Ghana on March 23rd 1984 from the IVORY COAST. We did not succeed and in the process, I lost many of my comrades. I was involved in other attempts to correct the situation I had helped to create.
CONCLUSION
At the tender age of 24 years, 1 was deceived and manipulated by RAWLINGS to participate in the overthrow of an elected government. I came to realise my mistake and therefore tried on several occasion to correct the wrongs done to Ghanaians and to let Ghanaians know who the man RAWLINGS was — a real con man.
I take this opportunity to sincerely apologise to the good people of Ghana and to ask for forgiveness for any harm done.
Ladies and gentlemen of the media, I will plead through you to the people of Ghana, particularly those who were directly victimised by our bogus 31 December Revolution to accept our plea against the backdrop of our tender ages at that time. Even I, who was the most senior amongst them was only 24, and at the age it was easy for Flt.Lt. Jerry Rawlings to deceive and manipulate us. I am not by this suggesting in any measure that we are not blamable.
I only realise that we were all misled and that all that we stood for was nothing but vanity. I wish at this stage on my own behalf and on behalf of my younger colleagues both dead and alive to say that we are truly sorry and sincerely apologise to the good people of Ghana and ask for forgiveness.
Ladies and gentlemen I shall also want to take this opportunity to humbly advise Ghanaians especially the youth to be wary of this man Rawlings.
He is a deceitful person, a liar and a fraud. He is indeed evil. He uses and dumps you after he has achieved his objective. You may even count yourself lucky if he does not in the end succeed in eliminating you. Of all my colleagues who actually prosecuted the 31 December Revolution none is still with him, except probably his wife.
Finally, I’ll want to thank the present government for setting up the National Reconciliation Commission and thus giving people like me the golden opportunity to express my sincere remorse and repentance. I hope the Almighty God will forgive us.
