Mr Awuni,

That was a good article and truth in a sense. It will take me a greaT DEAL TO GO TO vOLTA rEGION AND ESPECIALLY eWELAND.Most of them are inward looking and evil and would not appreciate whatever you do for them.To some no matter whatever you do for them it is no enough.Take a Northern and help in a small way many people will hear of it and say a word of prayer for you but an Ewe will hate you more.Is it beacuse of JJ RaWLINGS?Boakye Gyan helped safe the life of JJ Rawlings what are their relationships today?Just an example. How many Akans will accept food from an Ewe and eat it?God give us sense.Look at Mills Govt. how many Ewes are in the Govt. compare to other regions and yet an Ewe will be the first to bring the Govt. down.Just mark tese words.

I came into contact with a taxi driver who happened to be an ewe. He gave me a fare that I thought was over the board. When I asked him to bring the fare down he told me to simply stop paying. My sister turned to me and said just give him the money because he might jujufy you. I mean if everyone has a perception of this kind about a group of people, to me that kind of really bad. On the other hand, I used to be in the volta region where I was being abused by somebody. The ayigbes took me and cared for me. It depends on how you rate them. Their idea of using juju for people to be scared of them is the same idea that is making people hate them. Nobody wants to be jujufied. These voltans neeed to work very hard on their damage control.

Prejudices, beliefs and perceptions are not formed out of thin air.

These prejudices, beliefs and perceptions are based on observed and entrenched practices and behavior identifiable with groups of people.

These will continue to be part of our social lives and they are not going anywhere.

Being of Ewe descent, I am not sure that I will be showing RESPECT to, say, Fantes if I wrote an article and titled it "The People of the Central Region Are Not Demons." Such an act would depict some sort of pontification or smugness.

It is obvious that you love what you do, but you have to learn to incorporate some sensitivity into your articles, so as to avoid being seen as callous and inconsiderate, especially now that ethnocentric rants and diatribes are on the ascendancy.

Just gauge the phalanx of responses to your article and you will understand what I am talking about. Good luck!

Awuni Azure, nice writing but.... These Ewes... I'm sure. Their women are OK but the men..!!

To be honest, most Ashanti men would love to marry an Ewe woman, they are simply loving and they have a heart. I call them "dahda". I talk from experience, the Ewe woman is very adaptable, language, culture, food... name it. They are proper Ghanaians and in most cases, they leave their Fante and Ashanti women wanting. But their men!! Goodness!! Anyway, it is only the few bad grapes that spoil the bunch.

We all Ghanaians tend to be ethnocentric, one way or the other but the spotlight has been shifted onto the Ewes because of the revolution that they dominated, with Jerry Rawlings encouraging them to set the Akans in their sights as the "enemy of the state". This is the real problem the Ewe man faces. He has become a victim of circumstances and it will take more than Azure Awuni's nice and warm words to defuse that belief that the average Ewe man is insecure, especially when an Akan or Ashanti man is breathing the same air with him in a constricted space. They panic and murder is often resorted to by the Nyebro to preserve his skin lest the "Fufu eating" Ashanti gains the initiative and chops his head off for ritual sacrifices at Menhyia in Kumasi. What paranoia!

I blame Rawlings, he is the one man still fanning this suspicion.

Bratuo.

My brother, that is a wonderful piece. The most pathetic part of it all is that, those who are supposed to know better eg. lawyers, teachers, doctors and the well educated are the worse culprits. Thank tou bro. Kudos

Do they know God that they are serving? Unless they accept Jesus Christ as their personal saviour else all of them will perish.

As the scripture has already said. They worship what they don't know and they need repentance and deliverance from Almighty God. That is my advise to them. Amen and Amen!!

Am sorry to say that this SRC president who is supposed to be writing this article is the rather the one propagating this vicious negative perception about Volta Region. So many years past till date Volta Region schools attracted pupils and students from all over the country, Ghana.
Does the writer thinks that these great schools like Mawuli School, Bishop Herman College, Kpando Secondary School, Keta Secondary School, Amdzofe Training College, Peki Training College, Ho Poly, etc, just to mention a few, educate only people from the Volta Region. What it means is that graduate from these schools and colleges carry the true reflection of the loving people of the Volta Region back to their various regions.
Same way indigenes from the Volta Region went to schools and colleges and universities outside the Volta Regions where their colleagues met and interacted with them to know them and their culture better.
Is it today that journalism students will fear the people of Volta Region?
I am from Kpetoe in the Volta Region, a border down and border guards and custom officers from all over Ghana lived and worked. I began to speak twi right from Kpetoe because of some of my primary school classmates particularly from Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions. I met some of those primary school classmates again at Sehwi Wiaso, Asawinso, Essam and Kaase in the Wetern Region when I did my National Service after my university.
Out of adventure and love for my country I travelled to every region of Ghana. I know them and respect their various cultures.
What the writer is saying has no meat and it is not necessary. If indeed these students of journalism are such fearful of the people of Volta Region, then something special must be done for them; they are very ignorant students who are not fit to be journalists.
What about those who travel everyday through Aflao to the eatern West Africa? Dont they eat when they travel? Is it only ewes who travel on the Aflao road? Are you saying that all the government institutions in the Volta Region employ only ewes from the Volta Region. Come on, give we the people of Volta Region a break; of course there is Mensah in every home! We are not perfect and we not the best but we are all Ghanaians and Aficans. Go to other Afican coutries, like Botwana, Malawi, Zimbabwe Ivory Coast and South Africa and you will see several similarities of various Ghanaian cultures.
Am sorry again to say that it is some of the so called elites in our society who display such ignorance, sometimes viciously though, and our poor inocent who had not had such education tend to believe them and this is creating a problem for the country's deveolpment.
STOP! STOP! and STOP! this and send the message that we are all one and no single person, nor clan nor tribe nor region can develop Ghana alone unless all of us.
Long Live Ghana! Long Live Ghanaian Unity!

I was married to an ewe and only realised my mistake when my In-laws started thretening that they will show me that they are ewes.My only crime is that I am not one of them and to add salt to injury,I failed to follow them to the volta region to perform some spiritual rites. You can't fight for the ewes when some of them are too proud of who they are and what they believe in.I have learnt a bitter lesson and I will never go near anything called volta region. My mother warned me about marrying from that part of Ghana but I felt she was not being relistic until my experience but it was too late.

You are free to write what you think but Ghana is a democratic country. Ewes are Ewes, evil and like you said, no sensible Ghanaian will like to go to the Volta region. Even Ewes are running away from their own Volta region. So stop desturbibg our ears with this evil Ewes because it will never change anything

MAA, it is indeed unfortunate that such prejudices prevail even among the most educated in our dear country. Having had numerous academic and family contacts with Ewes throughout my life, I can't find any negative differences between them and other tribes in Ghana in struggling to meet their life needs. Let's respect our different backgrounds and forge ahead in unity as a country.

Every tribe has unique feature

In Ghana, every tribe has something that makes it unique. Ewes are unique because of their insatiable desire for voodoo especially, tukpe.

Tour the entire nation and if you encounter an ewe living anywhere in Ghana, he has something that will scare that hell out of you.

Also, how many non-ewes heading government institutions in the Volta Region? Very few; at least less than one percent and the question is why?
