Four people have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service after a shooting incident during a burial service at Asamankese in the Eastern Region.

According to the Eastern South Police Command, the suspects were arrested following a tip-off about individuals carrying ammunition near the Chief’s Palace at Asamankese during the burial of six members of the royal family.

In a press statement on Monday, October 27, 2025, DSP David Fianko-Okyere of the Public Affairs Unit for the Eastern South Region said that a gun, live cartridges, and other weapons were retrieved from the suspects upon their arrest.

“The Eastern South Regional Police Command on Sunday October 26, 2025 arrested four suspects in connection with the shooting incident which led to the injuries of six civilians and three Police Officers during a burial and funeral rites of Six Family members at Asamankese.

“Police had information that some people were conveying guns and Cartridges into a room near the Chiefs palace and subsequently dispatched personnel to the scene for their arrest leading to the retrieval of One (1) single barrel gun, Eighty- Four (84) live AAA cartridges, Seven (7) cutlasses and two (2) knives," portions of the statement read.

The police added that the arrests sparked violent disturbances from aggrieved youths, who attacked officers, leaving three injured in the process.

“On arrest of the suspects Isaac Ntim, Nana Yaw Zenyo, Bismark K K Adam, 29, and Buaben Richard 25, some agitated youth attacked the Police Officers with stones and other implements causing injuries to Three (3) Police Officers on their heads and hands respectively and further caused damage to the windscreen and side glass of two (2) Police vehicles,” it added.

The statement added, “The youth also blocked the road at Asamankese - Akroso junction and around the chief's palace, firing guns indiscriminately on the allegation that the bereaved family may bury their six bodies in the royal cemetery.”

The disturbances left six people with gunshot injuries, and they have since been taken to health facilities for treatment.

“In the process, six victims, David Odame, 28 years, Musah Gyakweli, 29 years, Patrick Ofosu, Obeng Emmanuel, 18 years, Asamoah Sey, 18 years, and one other yet to be identified, sustained gunshot injuries. The victims are on admission at the Asamankese Government Hospital receiving treatment whilst all the suspects are in Police custody assisting with investigation,” it added.

Meanwhile, the police said they have deployed additional officers and increased surveillance to prevent the situation from escalating and to maintain law and order.
