General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia has said appointees of the Akufo-Addo government must rather be frightened by the coming of the Special Prosecutor and not members of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC).The President on Monday gave his assent to the Office of Special Prosecutor Bill passed by Parliament in November last year.
This kicks into action the processes to fully set up the Office to begin investigations and subsequent prosecution of corrupt public officials.
The Special Prosecutor’s office will be independent of the Executive and will have the mandate to investigate and prosecute cases of alleged corruption under the Public Procurement Act and other corruption-related offenses implicating public officers, political office holders and their accomplices in the public sector.
The setting up of the office of the Special Prosecutor was one of the key campaign promises made by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Some members of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) have threatened appointees of the erstwhile Mahama administration of a string of prosecution with the coming into office of the Special Prosecutor.
But Johnson Asiedu Nketia aka General Mosquito believes that current government appointees must rather have cause for concern.
If there is a group of people who should fear the coming of the Special Prosecutor it should be the NPP and not the NDC. Killing one's enemy is not difficult, but having to kill ones relative is. All this while, governments come into power and hound members of the previous administration, but this time around there’s going to be a paradigm shift.
The Special Prosecutor can arrest and prosecute an appointee of a sitting governor who has been implicated in corruption. Some think the Special Prosecutor is coming because of NDC appointees, such thinkers will be laughing at the wrong side of the mouths. Unless the government’s aim is not to make the Special Prosecutor and independent person, and rather be one who can be manipulated.
“There are so many cases of corruption that has happened in the first year of Akufo-Addo’s rule, the BOST saga and several others. Indeed the Special prosecutor will have a lot of work to do on NPP appointees, ” Asiedu Nketia said.
