Akufo-Addo picks Dr. Bawumia as running mate today
A founding father of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has given indications that the party’s flagbearer will be choosing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate later today.
The flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will be presenting his choice of running mate to the Council of Elders of the party for them to either accept or deny who partners him for the 2012 elections.
There are three front runners for the position of running mate for Nana Addo, but Dr. Bawumia who has been at the fore front of the pack is the most favoured option.
The other contenders are a Deputy Minority Leader Ambrose Dery and Alhaji M. N. D Jawula. Information is, however, rife that the flagbearer has chosen Dr. Bawumia, who was a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
Bawumia, according to the grapevine, is not the favourite of the party’s bigwigs. Alhaji Jawula is believed to be the people’s man since he appeals to the “zongo boys” due to his football background, however, Nana Addo prefers working with his 2008 vice presidential candidate.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said, “I cannot tell you exactly the name he [Nana Addo] has in mind but I feel strongly that he might come out with a name of a person he has worked with and know the person well and he would like to have continuity and in this modern world, the economy of a nation is very important and I believe strongly he would go in for an economist with tremendous experience to help him. ”
“Another look also is the youthfulness of Dr. Bawumia which is a great asset to a political party; he has been tried and tested in 2008, and he’s been with us during the debate last time for Vice Presidential candidates, he did tremendously well and he is somebody who is calm, cool and collected. ”
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe added: “I’d be surprised if Nana Addo chooses someone else but I would not be disappointed. ”
