Anas files GHC25m defamation suit against Kennedy Agyepong

Ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has filed a defamation suit against Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyepong.

The TigerEye PI head whose latest investigative sting is shaking the foundations of Ghana football is suing the New Patriotic Party member for 25 million cedis for libelous comments allegedly made by Mr Agyepong.

The suit follows weeks of media attacks by the MP against the investigative journalist in an attempt to stop him from airing the documentary “Number 12,” Anas’ investigative piece detailing corruption in Ghana football.

Even though the documentary largely covers bribery and corruption in football, the MP’s name and that of the leading members of the governing party were mentioned by the Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi in a manner that was not complimentary.

In the video which was premiered on June 6, Nyantakyi is heard demanding an amount of $11 million from a supposed businessman as an "appearance fee" to invest in Ghana.

The amount he claimed will be shared between the president, Nana Akufo-Addo, the vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Roads Minister and his Deputy.

According to Nyantakyi, the loud-mouthed Kennedy Agyepong who is so powerful and influential in the governing party must not be left out of the deal.

The presidency has since distanced itself from the claims and has reported the matter to the police CID which has resulted in the arrest and charges of defrauding by false pretence against Mr Nyantakyi.

Shortly after the TigerEye PI outfit, the firm that investigated the GFA, served notice about their readiness to make public details of their investigation, Kennedy Agyepong began a campaign to stop Anas from airing the documentary.

From one radio station to the other, Mr Agyepong made allegations of tax evasion, invasion of privacy, blackmail, etc demanding that Anas must not air the video.

For a man who walks in a hood because of the kind of investigation he does and known publicly by so few a people, the incensed Assin Central MP decided to expose the identity of Anas Aremeyaw Anas by posting multiple pictures on TV and social media claiming to be the TigerEye PI head.

Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Kweku Baako Jnr who is acclaimed to have trained Anas Aremeyaw Anas has on multiple cases debunked the claims by the Assin Central MP.

It appears Anas wants to give Kennedy Agyepong the opportunity to prove the claims and allegations he has been making against him and has therefore proceeded to court with a defamation suit.

The suit filed on June 8 is requesting Kennedy Agyepong to appear in court within eight days or in default, “judgment may be given against you without further notice to you.”

Apart from the damages of ¢25 million, Anas Aremeyaw Anas is also demanding costs, including lawyers’ fees.
