Ankaful Prison officer jailed 13-years for possessing narcotics

A Cape Coast Circuit Court has sentenced a prison officer of the Ankaful Main Camp Prison, Second Class Officer Abibula Nankpa, to Thirteen [13] years in prison in hard labour for possession of narcotic drugs.

The officer, who was arrested by guards of the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison in August 2016, as he attempted to throw some substances believed to be Indian hemp to inmates, was finally found guilty of the crime on Monday, April 30 this 2018.

He has since commenced his imprisonment at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison, and is also set to be dismissed by the Ghana Prisons Service.

Speaking to Citi News about the incarceration of the officer, the Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, DSP Daniel Machator, said the service in the Region is on high alert to arrest and deal with any officer or members of the public who attempt to deal in narcotics at the prison. He noted the number of guards placed at different points at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison coupled with the arrest and conviction of their own officer, is a reminder to the public that they will not spare any offender.

“He was apprehended by officers, which means that steps are already in place. In some instances, they (visitors) try to hide these contraband in food items, in clothes that are going to the inmates and officers also hide it in their boots, under their belts etc”, DSP Machator revealed.

He admitted that since no security system is full-proof, some of these infractions could happen, but the service periodically organizes searches in order to retrieve such contraband items that may have found their way into the facility.

The Ghana Prisons Service, according to the PRO, is taking all necessary steps to cleanse itself of “such recalcitrant officers to at least have a near-perfect” security system at the Ankaful Main Camp Prison and the Maximum Security Prison.
