Biakoye DCE’s vehicle accident: Volta NDC Secretary calls for DCE's dismissal

The Volta Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), James Gunu, has called on the Biakoye District Chief Executive (DCE), Comfort Attah, to resign for committing a “serious offense in corporate governance” of releasing her official vehicle to be driven by his brother.

James Gunu, has further called for the prosecution of the DCE's brother popular known as, Papaa Obroni, who was allegedly driving the official vehicle said to have caused an accident in Jasikan on Monday, January 1, 2019.

The DCE's official vehicle was reported to have collided head-on with a 23-seater sprinter bus heading from Hohoe to Nkwanta. The accident claimed 4 lives and injured several others.

Mr Gunu said the decision to release an official vehicle to an unauthorized person is an “act of complete incompetency” hence Madam Attah’s appointment must be terminated by President Akufo-Addo.

“The moment you do that, it brings into the local government unnecessary politics” he added when addressing the media Thursday morning." He said.

Mr Gunu further indicated the act of releasing public properties to unauthorized persons for use would be a burden on the government’s coffers.

“Who fueled the vehicle that was used by the DCE’s brother, where was he going, who assigned him? Is it the assembly’s money that was used to fuel the vehicle being driven by the DCEs brother? This is also an economic toll on the assembly”, the former Akatsi North DCE stated.

He added, “the attempt to extend this kind of ‘family and friends governance’ to the local level is worrying” and urged Local Government authorities not to encourage such acts.

Mr Gunu who sympathized with the victims advised they sue the assembly if it fails to cater for their medical bills and fully compensate them.

Meanwhile, the accident victims are receiving treatment at the Volta Regional Hospital, St Anthony’s Hospital in Dzodze and the Worawora Hospital.

A victim on admission at the Volta Regional Hospital, Rebecca Gyemawu has been paralyzed from the waist down after suffering several fractures in both legs in the accidents.

The 28-year-old national service personnel also lost a seven months old pregnancy, her husband suffered a fracture in the right leg while her 3-year-old son injured one of his arms.
