Black Stars to play Namibia on June 9
Ghana’s Black Stars will play the Brave Warriors of Namibia in their first AFCON?2019 international friendly in Dubai on Sunday, June 9.
This was confirmed to Graphic Sports Online by a member of the Black Stars Management Committee, Mr Perry Okudjeto, on Friday.
Mr Okudjeto, who doubles as the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, explained that though the two countries had agreed in principle to play, Ghana had to wait for the confirmation of the date from the Namibians before announcing it officially.
He further revealed that Ghana’s other opponent in the pre-AFCON friendlies, South Africa, had also confirmed to honour the match on June 14.
Coach Kwasi Appiah, perhaps, opted for Namibia on account of their finishing as runners-up to Ghana’s Group F opponents, Guinea-Bissau, who topped Group K during the qualifiers.
While Guinea-Bissau made their AFCON debut in 2017, Namibia are two-time participants of the Africa Cup of Nations in1998 and 2008.
The Bafana Bafana of South Africa, 1996 champions, are in Group D alongside Namibia, Morocco and Cote d’Ivoire.
Four-time champions, Ghana, are in Group F alongside, five-time champions, Cameroun, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.
The Black Stars will embark on a three-week camping in Dubai on June 1 and open the Egypt 2019 AFCON against the Squirrels of Benin on June 25.
