Chorkor residents unhappy after heavy rains swept foot bridge into sea

Residents living around Chorkor in the Ablekuma South Municipality have raised grave concerns over the poor state of a temporary bridge built across the Chemu Lagoon.

This comes after heavy outpour of rains swept away a floating bridge on Sunday, April 26, 2020.

The floating bridge was constructed by the Ablekuma West Constituency MP, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, earlier in January this year.

The Chemu bridge which connected residents of Chorkor and Shiabu daily was built to ease human movements within the various communities.

However, the new bridge, made up pallets of wood and supported with car tyres, has been laid across a choked and filthy Chemu lagoon.

Residents now fear for their lives as they say they are left with no option but to commute daily on the weak and feeble wooden structure to the other side of town.

Citing Sunday's outpour as an example, one of the residents who spoke to GhanaWeb said it had now become dangerous to use the bridge.

Adding, they are especially worried the upcoming rainy season will further spell doom for them.

“People would have died if they had used the bridge on Sunday. The bridge collapsed and was headed straight into the sea during the heavy rainfall. We need a new one for our safety."



Another complained that the dire situation makes them feel the absence of a Member of Parliament in the area adding, “in this town, we don’t have an MP or Assemblyman. If we have them they wouldn’t have built this weak bridge which the rainfall washed away into the sea.”

“If indeed we had an MP or Assemblyman our environment wouldn’t have been like this but we don’t have any here.”

Residents are therefore pleading with government and authorities to soon come to their aid.
