Investigate procurement interest of mandatory tow levy - Mornah

National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah wants security agencies in the country to investigate the controversial towing levy to see in whose procurement interest some actors are forcing it down the throats of Ghanaians.

“The procurement interest of someone is being pushed in the controversial towing levy. I will want the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to investigate the matter and expose those pushing the agenda in their personal interest”, he stated on Okay Fm.

He described the law as pure thievery and an attempt to rob Ghanaians hinting of plans to resist it in all spheres if authorities are impervious to the concerns of Ghanaians and go ahead to implement a policy that will satisfy the interest of a few.

Vehicle owners and motorcyclists by September this year were supposed to pay compulsory annual fees, tied to the acquisition of road worthy certificate, to cater for towing services.

Fees per year for both commercial and non-commercial vehicles, depending on tonnage, range from GH?10 to GH? 200.

The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) justifies the introduction of the service indicating that it will rid the country’s roads of abandoned broken down vehicles which cause accidents.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Ghana Police Service are collaborating to ensure such stationary vehicles are cleared off the road.

There were disapproval among the travelling public, particularly commercial drivers, over the scheduled implementation of the new regulation leading to the intervention by the parliament but nothing significant has been made.

Mr Mornah says it is not apt and the better it is scrapped from the laws of the country, the better for the current administration.
