Don't Repeat NDC's Mistakes - Operation Save the Suffering Masses

Operation Save the Suffering Masses , a political and social pressure group in Kumasi, has cautioned the Kufuor administration against repeating the mistakes of the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government on matters affecting workers.

It said the trust that workers had in the government must manifest in improved conditions, especially in salary levels, to cushion them against the rising cost of living in the country.

Nana Kwasi Kwarteng, chairman of the group, said in an interview in Kumasi that for a long time, politicians had taken workers for granted. He said workers, especially those in the public sector who work hard to keep government machinery running, continued to live on meagre salaries.

Nana Kwarteng recounted that the NDC government did very little to raise the hopes of workers and it seemed the Kufuor administration was following suit, a situation he described as very unfortunate. He said the debate on salary levels would come to nothing if the government, which has the final say, is not prepared to improve working conditions.

He wondered what prevented the government from coming out with improved salary levels , when it knew that salary levels are low, instead of calling for a national debate. “We, therefore, suggest that the debate be called off since the government has the final say in such matters,” he said.

Nana Kwarteng called on parliamentarians to lead the fight towards improved living conditions for workers. He called on workers to be very wary of politicians who would approach them with promises they could not fulfil as the nation prepares towards the next elections.
