Easter is a festival commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, as described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day after his burial following His crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary over 2000 years ago.
The resurrection signifies a renewed faith between Christians and their maker, as well as forgiveness of sins.
In Ghana, Easter, like many other Christian festivals have become synonymous to merrymaking, characterized by wild jubilations and excessive intake of alcohol.
As Ghana joins the Christian community to mark Easter, GBC’s Nathaniel Nartey has been speaking to some Religious Leaders to find out the best way for Christians to celebrate the resurrection day.
The Immediate Past General Secretary of Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Opuni Frimpong adviced Ghanaians not to lose track of the spiritual side of Easter, which is to reflect and meditate on one’s relationship with God.
“It looks like there are people who want to gather all their dirty things during Easter, go to Kwahu and and and unfold them but I think that is wrong. I say there are many who consider Easter at the moment for spiritual renewal time to get closer to God…. We must address this….The celebration must be in moderation but then you have instances where too much excesses around.”
The General Overseer of the Lord’s Pentecostal Church International, Apostle Richard Buafor asked Christians to use the occasion as a period of reconciliation, just as Jesus Christ reconciled Christians with their maker before his crucifixion
“I believe that the period of Easter for a Christian should draw one to reflect and meditate on the essence of the season, and the essence of the season has to do with reconciling with God…..Just as Christ came to reconcile us to God.”
For his part, the Head Pastor of the New creation church international, Rev Emmanuel Doh said Christians can make merry during Easter, but it should be done in moderation.
“We have to reflect on the essence of Easter, ad we can be happy because its a day that God sent his son to die for us. So we can be happy and celebrate but this should be done in a way not to go back to commit sins”
Almost all the Leaders GBC spoke to, were hopeful that Ghanaians will use the occasion to forge ahead for the growth of the country.
