Drivers refuse to use GHC199,000 lorry station due to absence of washrooms

Drivers for whom a new lorry station has been constructed at Chiraa, in the Sunyani West District Assembly, have refused the facility, because of the absence of washrooms.

YEN.com.gh understands that the new lorry station costs GHC199,000, and has been neglected by the drivers.

The first phase of the projected was completed about four years ago, and all efforts to get them to use it have proven futile.

The assembly is however poised to start work on the second phase of the project, and this is scheduled to be completed in July 2019.

According to the aggrieved drivers, the new station has also has a limited space, and for that reason, allow passengers to board their vehicles on the shoulders of the road.

The situation has however contributed to accidents, especially among school children in the area.

Ghananewsagency.org reports that the drivers said they were unhappy the assembly failed to include toilets and urinals in the second phase of the project, after they met and informed authorities to re-look at the contract.

When contacted, Dickson Ayi, the Sunyani West District works engineer, confirmed the land for the lorry station was small, but the assembly had no other option because that was the land the Chiraa Traditional Council released for the project.

He added that the project did not include the sanitary facilities because the toilets and the urinals were not captured by in the budget for the project.
