Former president of the Association of Ghana Industries, Dr Tony Oteng Gyasi, has criticised media persons for always engaging in reviewing newspapers and “moaning and groaning” about how bad Ghana is instead of being development oriented.

Speaking on GTV’s ‘What is Next’ programme hosted by Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, the Former Board Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana said, whilst the media in the western world are producing developmental content, the Ghanaian media which he observed as being made of mostly young people are interested in reviewing newspapers every morning when given the opportunity to be on radio.

He said even though this creates an impression of a country in distress, the country has steadily improved over time, hence Ghanaians should be proud people.

“Our media is full of young people, but when our young people sit on the radio in the morning their interest is review the newspapers and then moan and groan about how bad our nation is. Our nation is not bad, I was in this country sixty years ago I know what is was then, this country is doing well.

Steadily overtime we are improving as a country. We need to be proud of our country, we need to be proud of ourselves. Media find something apart from reviewing newspapers and feeling sorry for us and for everybody.”

Citing an example, Dr Oteng Gyasi said instead of the media to do follow up stories on government’s successful “Year of Return” initiative, they have been sleeping on the many stories and experiences that came along with the initiative.

“I don’t see the media doing any follow up stories. Who are the people who came, why did they come, what was their experience here? We should be milking this for content for the next six months.”

After making various submissions on unemployment and youth entrepreneurship, Mr Oteng Gyasi in an advice to the youth amongst other things encouraged them to acquire education and take up the attitude of savings.
