Fire destroys Alhaji Ayarna’s house

From Zakaria Alhassan, Tamale

A HOUSE, belonging to the deputy Northern Regional organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Ayarna has been razed by fire suspected to be the work of arsonists.

Nobody was injured, neither has any arrest been made.

All the items in the bed-room apartment, the kitchen, stores and part of the garage were completely burnt.

According to Alhaji Ayarna who is also a hajj agent and has been operating in the region since 1987, $70,000, ?2,800 and 1,700 riyadh paid to him by prospective hajj pilgrims this year were burnt to ashes.

It would be recalled that Alhaji Ayarna suffered a similar arson on his Mercedes Benz car a day after the declaration of the results of the presidential run-off.

Alhaji Ayarna, who was not in the house at the time of the incident, said it was politically motivated.

A neighbour, Edith Lenudo, told the Graphic that whilst breastfeeding her baby around mid-night, she heard footsteps around Ayarna’s house.

She said when she was about to sleep, she again heard a big bang. “I rushed out only to see Alhaji’s house on fire.”

Another neighbour, Adam Wumbei, said he heard some people crying in the wee hours of the morning, and that when he opened his window, he saw the house on fire.

According to Wumbei, he, and some neighbours attempted putting the fire out, but failed due to its intensity. He said an hour later, personnel of the Fire Service arrived with a fire tender.

Alhaji said he was in one of his houses in town when the incident happened. According to Ayarna, his sister who had been living in the burnt apartment called him early Monday morning to inform him about the incident.
