Ghana is among five other African countries that top the world chart on most political tweets in 2015, according to Portland’s report.
Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Ghana respectively are the African countries that recorded the highest tweet in relationship to politics ahead of the UK and US.
The report said Egypt tweet the most among African countries with 28% of all the geo-located Twitter volume amounting to 500million tweets, Nigeria with 360million geo-located tweets, South Africa recorded 325million geo-located tweets, Kenya with 175 million goe-located tweets and Ghana with 70 million goe-located tweets.
There has been a growing trend of twitter usage in Africa where most related topics be it politics and entertainment take center stage on the platform.
With the aid of hashtags people easily track conversations and also participate in it, one of the dominant hashtags according to the report is #NigeriaDecides in 2015.
Senior Partner for content and digital strategy at Portland Mark Flanagan said the report shows the platform in Africa is coming of age where serious politics and governance debates are held as compared to their earlier report in 2012 that talks about twitter in Africa as a platform for social interaction or frivolous banters.
According to the report the improvement is believed to be have been made possible by the use of the common language, English, by most African countries allowing them to share thoughts on issues in other African countries.
Portland is a London based integrated communication agency, which analyzed 1.6 million goe-located tweets and 5000 hashtags on the continent as part of their third “How Africa Tweets” report.
