Ghana's new envoy to UN presents accreditation to secretary general

Mrs. Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, newly appointed Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations today (July31, 2015) presented her Letters of Credence to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon at an impressive ceremony at the UN headquarters in New York.

By this feat, Mrs. Pobee who looked resplendent in her beautiful kente cloth becomes the First ever Ghanaian female to represent Ghana on the prestigious 194-member world body.

Congratulating Ambassador Pobee, a career Diplomat with more than 25 years Foreign Service experience on her assumption of duty, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon recounted Ghana's influential role in the United Nations and wished her a very successful tenure.

Recalling his many memorable visits to Ghana, first as Chef de Cabinet of the President of the General Assembly, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea and now as Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon mentioned his interaction with Korean business community in Ghana , especially those engaged in the fishing industry.

The UN boss expressed his appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and Foreign Minister Hannah Serwaa Tetteh for their leading roles in dealing with the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa.

On her part, an elated Mrs. Pobee assured the Secretary General of Ghana's commitment to constructively engage the UN to achieve its aims and objectives and to enhance the warm relations between Ghana and the UN.

She expressed the Ghana government's gratitude to Mr. Ban Ki-Moon and his dedicated UN staff, for their intervention in mobilizing international response to fight the Ebola epidemic in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

On the Post 2015 Development Agenda Ambassador Pobee informed the Secretary General of Ghana's active engagement in the negotiation process, as a result of which Ghana's National development Planning Commission is currently developing a long term national framework to incorporate Sustainable Development Goals for implementation at the country level.

Mrs. Pobee further assured the United Nations of Ghana's commitment to continue supporting the UN's Peace Keeping Operations in order to promote world peace and security.

She also thanked the Secretary General for making time to receive her immediately after assuming post.
