A Ghanaian lecturer based in the United States of America has died in a crash in South Carolina.

The faculty member of Benedict College who has been identified as Paul Korkutse Vowotor, died on the scene when his car, a 2002 Toyota sedan, collided into a semi track on the expressway, Interstate 20.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened near the Two Notch Road exit on I-20 West just before 1pm on Wednesday, February 19, 2020.

A report by wbtv.com indicates the two vehicles involved in the accident were going the same direction on the expressway when Mr Vowotor lost control of his car.

Officials say the car went off the right side of the road, hit a guardrail, then went back onto the road and slid under the semi’s trailer. That’s when the sedan caught fire.

The highway patrol further revealed that Paul Vowotor died of blunt trauma to the head and chest.

He was 64 years of age and lived on Valley Heights Lane in Columbia.

The Benedict College, confirming the death in a statement, said Mr Vowotor had been teaching at Benedict College’s business school for over 18 years. He handled classes like business administration, management, and marketing.

“Please join the Benedict College family in praying for our fallen Tiger, Mr. Paul Vowotor and his family,” the statement further reads.

Though the driver of the trailer was not injured in the accident, the recyclable plastic pellets it was carrying spilled onto the road after the crash.

Paul Vowotor’s next of kin is said to have been informed of the unfortunate incident.
