Govt have not forgotten any of its pre-election promises

Asamankese (E/R), May 19, GNA- The Minister of Communication and Technology, Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah, has assured that the government of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) had not forgotten any of the many promises that it made to the people of Ghana before the 2000 elections.

He said with the country preparing to go through another general elections, the government expected the electorate to be guided by its achievements so far.

Mr Kan-Dapaah was speaking at the inauguration of a 300,000-US dollar Ghana Telecom telephone exchange at Asamankese in the West Akim District on Wednesday.

He acknowledged that the country was going through some economic hardships but explained that the government had to take such harsh economic decisions to lay the foundation for future economic growth.

Mr. Kan-Dapaah explained that to create job for the youth, the government had to encourage private sector to borrow money from the banks to invest, recalling that at the time the NPP government took over the administration of the country, bank interest rates were around 52 per cent.

He stated that such rates did not encourage investment and so government had to work hard and now the bank borrowing rate is around 25 per cent.

The Minister called on the electorate to forget about the past and look forward for a bright future, adding, "Ghana is quiet rich and all that is needed is unity and truthfulness."

He called on supporters of the NPP not to regard the supporters of other political parties as enemies since they, as Parliamentarians of the NPP, live in harmony with their colleagues in the opposition parties and "so there is no reason for the sympathisers of the parties to fight among themselves."
