Govt to provide phones In schools & colleges

Government plans to provide telephone facilities in all senior secondary schools and training colleges in the country within the next three years.

This is to enable them to have access to the internet and bring them in conformity with the changing trends in information technology

Mr Felix Owusu-Adjapong, Minister of Communications and Technology, announced this when he paid a working visit to Affiliated Computer Services -Business Process Solutions Ghana Limited (ACS-BPS) in Accra.

The company deals in software for export as well as processing data on insurance and health for clients in the United States of America.

He said although there are many constraints in making these facilities available, government is working seriously to make it possible.

He said it has become necessary to educate people on the importance of information technology and the use of computers.

Mr Owusu-Adjapong said consequently, government will encourage private companies involved in the assembling and manufacturing of computers to expand their operations.

He expressed government’s support for the company and commended it for taking the initiative to set up such a business.

Mr Charles Okai, Technical Specialist, said the company currently employs about 750 Ghanaian data entry clerks, technicians and experts in computer technology who run three shifts.

He expressed the hope that the company would be able to employ about 1,500 personnel in each shift so as to assist in reducing the high unemployment rate in the country.

Mr Okai mentioned the unavailability of the right people with the requisite skills and the unavailability of infrastructure as some of the problems facing the company.

Mrs Edith Ahinaye Okai, Human Resource Administrator, gave the assurance that more jobs will be created and students will also have the opportunity to be employed on part-time basis when the company embarks on its expansion programme.
