Historian Anokye Frimpong to contest in 2024 presidential election

Historian and lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong will be contesting in the upcoming December 7, 2024, presidential election under the ticket of the People's Redemption Movement (PRM).

This comes after the historian was elected as the presidential candidate of the PRM by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the movement.

The acting General Secretary of PRM, Edward Adade, who announced Anokye Frimpong as the flagbearer of the movement at a press conference in Accra on Monday, June 3, 2024, touted his credentials to lead the party into the 2024 election.

“The NEC, acting on its mandate to elect a presidential candidate on behalf of the members, had at its last sitting on May 18, 2024, elected Lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong as the party's presidential candidate for the 2024 election.

“In subsequent elections, this method will be revised for greater democratic pluralism. I have the honour on behalf of the National Chairman, Lawyer John Appiah, the National Executive Committee, and members of our great party, the Red Lion, to present to you Yaw Anokye Frimpong Esq. as the presidential candidate of the People's Redemption Movement (PRM) for the 2024 election,” he said.

Anokye Frimpong, in his acceptance speech, outlined some major policy measures he would be undertaking as president including a review of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.

He indicated that it does not make sense for students whose parents can afford to pay school fees to be allowed to go to school for free, and his government would implement a “Limited Free Education” programme.

“What do I mean? All the children in public schools are classified as poor, so SHS education would be automatically free for them. But if your parents can pay 3,000; 5,000, 10,000 (Ghana cedis) a term at Morning Star, what shows that parent cannot pay the government’s fee which is around GH₵2,000?” he quizzed.

The presidential candidate added, “In any case, whether you are rich or poor because you were not starving and you ate and were able to write the BECE, please note that feeding would never be free anywhere in this country. Rich or poor, Free Education or no Free Education, you would pay for feeding.”

He also said that if he becomes president, his government would make every Ghanaian pay a maintenance fee to fix the deteriorating infrastructure in the country, including roads.
